Hirst Applegate is always looking for talented and dedicated people to join our team. From secretaries to senior partners, we believe strongly in a firm culture that promotes our commitment to providing quality legal representation through our core values of leadership, teamwork, and innovation. We believe in working hard, but are equally committed to supporting our attorneys and staff in maintaining a balanced life beyond work.
Professional and personal growth is also valued at Hirst Applegate. The firm offers numerous in-house mentorship sessions from the partners for staff and associates. Topics covered range from practice tips in the rules of civil procedure and case development and investigation to topics focused on personal growth such as attaining financial independence. In addition to in-house development, the firm encourages and supports involvement of our staff and attorneys in professional development and networking, including attending annual conferences for legal organizations and developing knowledge in specific practice areas through concentrated training sessions.
Hirst Applegate attorneys and staff are also given the opportunity to grow professionally at a quick pace within their abilities. For example, we expect associate attorneys working on litigation files to start taking depositions within the first three to six months of employment and to assist in trials within the first year of practice. This is not a firm where young attorneys will only “carry the briefcases” of senior attorneys for their first years as an attorney. Also, the partnership track at Hirst Applegate is typically in the five to six year range with some attorneys achieving partner status in less than five years after joining the firm. We seek to reward talent, commitment, and results – not just seniority.
Consistent with our philosophy of putting the client’s interests first, Hirst Applegate does not have a strict billable hour requirement. It is our belief that a strict billable hour requirement may encourage attorneys to do work that does not advance the client’s interests on a particular matter. Instead, we expect our partners, associates, and staff to work hard to get the best result for the client. When they do that, the billable hours take care of themselves. Nevertheless, a career at Hirst Applegate is a full-time job. Rather than set an arbitrary billable hour requirement, we expect our team to work an average of 40-50 hours per week on firm business. This could include billable and/or non-billable work on a file, pro bono work, firm administration, participation in certain professional and civic activities, and other endeavors that help you grow as a professional and contribute to the overall well-being of the firm.
At Hirst Applegate, community involvement is promoted and encouraged. Some of the legal organizations our attorneys participate in include The Harmonie Group, Defense Research Institute, National Institute of Trial Advocacy, TAGLaw, Wealth Counsel, Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, American Inns of Court, University of Wyoming Law School Liaison Committee, and the American Bar Association. Our attorneys also participate in a variety of non-legal boards and service organizations, including Mining Associates of Wyoming, the Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne, Cheyenne LEADS, Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, Cowboy Joe Club, Wyoming Art for the Cure, Cheyenne Botanical Gardens, Cheyenne Symphony Foundation, and the Young Men’s Literary Club.
Hirst Applegate attorneys also take an active role in coaching local teams in the Wyoming High School Mock Trial competition and sponsors the Hirst Applegate Mock Trial Competition at UW and the UW College of Law Trial Advocacy Competition.
Family is important at Hirst Applegate. Throughout the year the firm holds a variety of social events for attorneys, staff, and their families, and emphasizes the importance of balancing work life with home life. Our annual summer BBQ and Christmas party are some of the most anticipated gatherings of the year for our families. We also understand that having a family sometimes means our people may need to take time off during the day for medical appointments, school programs, or other family matters. We work with our staff and attorneys to accommodate those obligations.
When not working, Cheyenne and the surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for recreation, entertainment, and sporting events. Cheyenne offers numerous events and attractions throughout the year, including summer festivals in the Depot Plaza, Cheyenne Frontier Days, several golf courses and sports complexes, amateur and semi-professional sporting events, symphony concerts, shopping and dining, parks, and walking and biking paths. Not far from Cheyenne are also numerous outdoor recreational areas and parks, offering skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, and trail riding options for outdoor enthusiasts. Denver and Fort Collins are just a short drive from Cheyenne, giving convenient access to a major airport, numerous shopping malls, sporting and entertainment events, recreational opportunities, and a lot more.
Hirst Applegate offers attorneys and staff a competitive and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, which include paid vacation and sick leave, flex time, health and dental insurance for employees, reduced heath insurance premiums for family members of employees, life insurance coverage for employees, 401(k) retirement with employer match, payment of bar dues, CLE costs, select membership dues, and admission fees, paid parking, firm provided laptops and smart phones for attorneys, select tickets available for Cheyenne Frontier Days events, rodeos, and UW sporting events, and tickets to select benefits and fundraisers in the community.
Hirst Applegate was on the forefront of Wyoming firms to go paper-less, making every file, e-mail, note, or document available through our secure network. Each attorney has a laptop that provides secure remote access to the firm’s network and files from any location where wireless internet is available. In addition, e-mail, contacts, calendars, and reminders are available through mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets. We realize the value of technology to a busy, modern law practice and strive to stay ahead of the curve in that regard.
