Hirst Applegate attorney Billie Addleman recently presented on “The Art of the Settlement” at a continuing legal education seminar. Addleman addressed two topics, “Determining a Settlement Strategy Early On” and “The Settlement Process and Techniques.” Numerous areas were discussed including, evaluating the client’s goals, determining the strengths and weaknesses of a case, and the costs versus benefits of settling. Addleman stressed the importance of open communication with clients and opposing counsel in resolving cases. Additionally, he also spoke on common negotiating mistakes, on alternatives to compensation, and being flexible to facilitate settlement discussions and resolution.
